The objective of this webquest is to learn about and explore the ways in which different cultures across the world use dance and music to tell a story or as part of their tradition.
Cultural dances are very precious to many civilizations, they can contain parts of their history that would otherwise be lost. They are passed on from generation to generation. Dance is a common language that unites us all on some level and dance as art represents self-expression through the medium of human movement. It can provide a connection with the subject matter and help students understand concepts important in other disciplines. Dance can be ritual, art or entertainment. It can give groups a sense of identity and togetherness.
The students will watch a collection of videos from different cultures to gain ideas and information about how dance is an important aspect to everyday life. Students will get into assigned groups and using the information that they acquired from the videos will work on a dance of their own expressing how they feel, their backgrounds or whatever idea they choose to convey. Students can use their creativity and imagination with their newly gained ideas in an educational, fun, hands-on way of understanding the importance of self-expression in dance.
